I was one of the 7,000 Refugees….

That was the day of the horrific, history-changing events for everyone in the free world when terrorist murdering thousands of innocent people that was on aircrafts and in buildings.

Our Air Force Rescue Unit was crossing the Atlantic on our way home to California from our deployment in Kuwait, when the pilot came on over the PA system and announced the mishap of an aircraft crashing into one of the NY WTC Towers. It was awful, but then he came back on and announced yet another aircraft had hit the other Tower moments later. We later knew this was not just an accident but that we were under a horrifying attack.

The entire United States air space immediately turned into a “NO FLY ZONE” therefore we were forced to land into Gander Canada along with approximately 7 thousand other people that were on many other airlines and military aircraft. We travelers almost doubled the population of Gander overnight which set into motion their Crisis Action Plan which was all carried out flawlessly thanks to their Plan Team Members, citizens and Mayor Claude Elliot.

The people on my aircraft and I were shuttled to a church where there were cots and blankets set up and there was fruit and drinks set out to be consumed at will around the clock. There was a school next door where they had set up internet access and lodging for many other refugees, like me.

I was able to go to a local gym to shower, and walk down town to see how a phone company had set up temporary phone service to allow their guests to keep in critical communication with loved ones at home. I later heard of ordinary people doing heroic tasks to help us. I’ve heard of some who transported essential supplies from 6 hours away, Thank you Zeller’s store people. I have also heard of the awards the people of Gander Canada had justifiably received. Also, Thank You Salvation Army.

I have never meet a more heroic, more distinguishing people in my life as each of those Canadians that opened up their doors to their city, their homes and their hearts to a bunch of people they didn’t even know and yet treated them like family.

Folks, as long as I have a memory, I will never forget the smiling people hurrying down the street carrying pots and dishes filled with steaming food they have prepared in their own kitchens to help feed the thousands of dinner guests they did not invite but welcomed with opened arms and eager to help.

We tend to be numb when tragedy strikes others in another State or Countries like Haiti, Japan, New Orleans (where I was raised), and still recovering as those touched by Sandy. But being personally locked out of your own home or country, like we were in Canada, you get a different outlook when it is YOU needing help, it is good to have others ready, willing and able to provide you with your personal basic needs for survival (with respect) until you again can maintain yourself.

Canada, you are our family and I wise you well!!! But I want to personally thank you for being the beautiful people that you are. God Bless Canada and God Bless America.
